Drawing Comics is Easy Laika Scrooge McDuck
Drawing Comics is Easy (Except When its Hard) by Alexa Kitchen age 7. The children we work with are all amazed and inspired to see that someone their age has drawn their own book. This is a classic how-to comic. Laika, by Nick Abadzis, is the true-life story of the first ever animal in space, the brave Russian dog named Laika. Our pupils love the fact this is a true story and are quick to take this dog to their hearts. Abadzis is a master storyteller. The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck, by Don Rosa, builds on the rich legacy of Carl Bark's original Duck Tales. A great book for all ages with a little comedy, a little history and a lot of high adventure,
Moomins Bone Fantastic Four
The newspaper cartoon strips of Tove Janson's Moomins are a great introduction to these characters and an accesible slice of whimsy for both boys and girls. Bone by Jeff Smith is a fantasy adventure saga mixing cute characters with scary monsters and brave female heroes. A bit like Lord of the Rings meets the Smurfs. These classic Fantastic Four stories by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the 1960s set the template for modern superheroes. They have never been bettered.
Peanuts Asterix Adventrues in Cartooning
We love Charles Schulz's Peanuts strips, featuring Charlie Brown and Snoopy. And we also love these gorgeous new hardback collections from 1950 to the year 2000. Still a classic for children today, the stories of Asterix and Obelix open up a whole new world of history and travel in the guise of some fairly subversive slapstick humour. Adventures in Cartooning is a great book for getting started drawing comics, with loads of fun exercises and cartoons to complete.
